Oncology is the branch of medicine dealing with prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. The National Cancer Institute estimated in 2019, roughly 1.8 million people will be diagnosed with cancer in the United States. Medical interpreters are faced with the difficult position of interpreting bad news to LEP patients and families diagnosed with this disease. They are also faced with the task of interpreting an often formidable treatment plan to the LEP patient and their family. This module will familiarize the interpreter with the different forms of cancer and treatments. We will also discuss how to approach the task of interpreting difficult diagnoses.
