Joint Commission Standards
Joint Commission Standards

Clinicians are obliged to create systems and a culture that ensure quality care for LEP patients.  The Joint Commission has developed a set of standards on patient centered communication that emphasize the importance of language, cultural competence and patient centered care.  In this module, interpreters will learn how language barriers along with cultural beliefs affect health care and health outcomes.  We will examine high risk areas in which clear communication is crucial to the safety of the patient.  We will also look at communication requirements of LEP patients in various settings.  Interpreters will become familiar with the laws and regulations that the Joint Commission Standards are built upon.
