Fundamentals of Interpreting in Education Settings

In this module, students will be introduced to the challenging field of interpreting. We will discuss ethics and standards required of educational interpreters.  We will explore the difference between simultaneous and consecutive interpreting, and how each method is used in the triadic encounter, the importance of rate of speech, pronunciation, and presenting oneself professionally.  We will also discuss the stages of the interpreting encounter, the best practices and protocols  involved when introducing oneself to the other parties, along with tips on active listening, note taking, and interpreting in large groups.
