The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 was created to provide standards to protect patients' medical records and other health information provided to health plans, doctors, and healthcare business associates.  It is important that medical interpreters are educated in HIPAA compliance and how to apply appropriate administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect a patient's private health information.  In this module we will look at the safeguards that will ensure that patient privacy is maintained, and we will look at different scenarios where a HIPAA violation may be avoided.
